I thought I’d post this because I’d heard a lot of conflicting information about whether or not it’s ok to hit the gym while pregnant – and about how much exertion to undertake. I spoke to a personal trainer who specialises in pre and post natal exercise
and she said that on the whole, for women who have uncomplicated pregnancies and normal blood pressure, exercise is fine. Don’t take up anything new so you’re not suddenly using previously unused muscles, and definitely avoid contact sport. Make sure when
you exercise that you’re able to maintain a conversation – you shouldn’t be overly puffed or find it difficult to breathe. Low impact activities are great – swimming in particular is brilliant because of the sense of weightlessness. The trainer I spoke to
also said not to lift weights more than a few kilos so you’re not straining, and to avoid the treadmill if you’re feeling like your centre of gravity is off (the last thing you need is to be tumbling off a treadmill belt!) I was also curious about pilates,
which I’ve recently taken up. He said that in general pilates is fine, but to make sure I didn’t do exercises on my back after the 12 week mark because of the pressure that bub would exert on my major blood vessels.
