  I'm not sure what you mean you want to stay more in control. My experience with epidurals is that you are completely numb from your ribs down so you actually can't feel anything. At all. You start to get some sensation once the epidural starts to wear off but you're still quite numb. Pushing becomes kind of guess work as you can't really feel whats going on & if your pushing well enough & hard enough - the midwives your OB is pretty much telling you how you are doing. In terms of the catheter, you can't feel it going in at all & it's pretty much a non entity. Taking out the catheter just feels like pulling a tampon out (sorry for that description) & doesn't hurt at all. I'm not sure about the low dosage so you can still feel your legs unless you have a full block & they let it wear off slowly. You'd probably need to check with your doc. In any case, don't worry about the catheter - some people don't even realise they have it!

  Epidural Experiences

  This is my 3rd pregnancy and with the previous births I did'nt have any pain relief. Though this time as it may be my last i want to feel more in control so was contemplating an epidural but the idea of a catheter frightens me. Is it possible to get a low dose where i am still able to feel my legs? Any advice would be appreciated!

  I know it's important to listen to the advice given by your MCHN regarding the health & well-being of Hunter, but I think this advice about his dummy is crossing the line. If he likes his dummy & is settled by using it, then keep it. Did she give you a reason why he couldn't have a dummy? Was it based on SIDs recommendations or will it affect his safety & well-being? If yes, then perhaps consider getting rid of it, if not, then assume her advice is based on her own personal experiences or merely her opinion which you can decide to listen to or ignore. I got one of those dummy chains & clipped them to DD's sleeping bag (no she couldn't choke on it as the chain was too small) which helped her to retrieve it in the middle of the night. If the chain worries you, another tip is placing a few dummies around the cot so he can find one in the middle of the night. (Easier too if they glow in the dark). One thing a friend of mine did was put a larger strip of velcro on the cot & stuck a few dummies up so that her baby could get them in the middle of the night if she lost it. I think that would work if the baby was older though. Anyway, good luck. Glad to hear Hunter's doing well on the charts too.

  Dummy or no dummy?

  So, I was at the Maternal Health Centre again recently - yes I am slightly obsessed with getting my little boy Hunter weighed and measured - hey, he was 15% for so long and now we're up to 46%, it's getting exciting!. Anyway, I admitted that Hunter was waking during the night to cry as he'd lost his dummy. I got a stern look from the nurse who told me the dummy had to go. Cold turkey. That's it. No more. He'll deal with it. Yes, well he might but I may NOT! I love that he sleeps so well, and is so comforted by his dummy. Is this so wrong? I was told it was harder to break the habit of thumb sucking than dummy sucking but now I'm being told otherwise. I am confused... advice anyone?

  I had a similar issue with my first bub. I'm not sure what people's negative comments are about soy based formulas but they are a great alternative for lactose intolerant babies. I tend to think if they were so bad for young babies, it would be taken off the market. Another option if you are hesitant about using soy, would be to try Goats milk formula. I used the Karicare one & it gave me a healthy alternative to the lactose free options that she didn't like. Overtime she got better & grew out of the intolerance (by about nine months) & I was able to resume a diet consisting of lactose & dairy foods & drink. Just try & avoid these foods while you introduce solids & get that established & then try some yoghurt down the track & see how he goes. Good luck!

  Lactose intolerant babies

  I have a 9 month old boy who is lactose "sensitive" (not quite intolerant apparently) - we know this via the doctor and a process of elimination to see what food was upsetting him so much and causing the crying/wind. I haven't put him on Soy formula as I hear too many negative things about giving it to the young bubs, so have got him on lactose free formula. I'm making solids for him too - which is at times challenging as I am trying to minimise lactose in these too, yet don't want to skip putting lactose in his diet as I am hoping he'll grow out of his sensitivity. Does anyone have a similar bub and have advice as to what formula they like and what recipes work? Thanks for your help everyone!
