...because thriving babies are happy babies

I tried for two years before I conceived my first child. It was definitely worth the wait. I was exhausted in the early days of pregnancy, I found it really hard to concentrate and keep my eyes open at work! But I didn't have morning sickness (thank goodness for that). Apart from swollen ankles, the rest of the pregnancy was a breeze. I was only in labour for four hours, so it wasn't as bad as everyone had described it to be! My second pregnancy was quite similar to my first. Now I have two very talkative boys and I can't imagine my life without them.

New mums can wake up over 100 times a night to listen to or check on their babies. But what happens if you can't get back to sleep? Here are some tips that worked for me when I couldn't sleep after my babies: • Practice a few relaxation techniques such as toe tensing (where you tense and relax your toes one foot at a time), deep breathing, meditation or visualisation. Your goal is to relax, not to fall to sleep. Through relaxing, sleep will come, but if you obsess on the idea of sleep it will elude you. • Focus on calming sensations and thoughts. Release tension by focussing on a sound for about 10 minutes. You will begin to feel the anxiety and stress melt away. Stop any thoughts, obsessing or worrying by remaining relaxed. • Get out of bed and read a book for a little while to settle your mind down. Keep the lights low though so as not to signal to your body that it is time to wake up. • Eat a light snack or make a warm drink. For other tips, feel free to give us a call or live chat during normal business hours, or email us now; we can help answer any questions you might have, no matter how big or small!

Okay, so I have a toddler now and I have become seriously aware of swearing. I used to do a lot of it (not quite sailor-standard but colourful at times!). None of the mums in my mothers group say anything worse than "My goodness" so I am feeling a little behind the times. Now I watch all of my language but haven't really been strict until now. Hunter isn't talking yet so I still have time to undo anything I might have said earlier. But it got me thinking - when are we supposed to stop saying "bad" words that our kids pick up way too easily?
