Choosing a baby name, whether it’s as soon as you find out you’re pregnant or three weeks after birth, is an exciting part of pregnancy. It’s something special to share with your partner, family or friends and it can also be a challenge ... first, you need to decide on names you like, and then, agree! Naming baby is a big responsibility, which is why we’re here to help you with lots of tips.
Do you have any family naming traditions? You might name your baby after a place, a flower, or an important person you wanted to remember? Remember to share your tips for other mums coming up with baby names.
Baby naming tips
Some mums recommend making a list of girl names and boy names as early as you can, keeping a little notebook beside your bed. You can write down any names that pop into your head when you’re resting or dreaming, and keep adding to it along the way.
How to choose a baby name
How will you pick your baby’s name? Some people go for traditional family names, while others look for unusual names or base them on past experiences. Short first names tend to go with longer surnames and vice versa. There are plenty of great books and apps out there to help you too - for example, check out kicktopick.com and other baby naming websites for inspiration. Always check to see how your name will sound if it’s shortened, and if you’re going for a middle name, make sure you mix it with any first names you like.
Will you share your baby name?
You can ask your friends and family for inspiration, but don’t share your name with anyone unless you’re prepared to hear their full opinion ... they might say they don’t like it, which can be tough to take.
