In the third trimester (or sometimes earlier) you may start to experience sore or painful ribs. The pain can range from mild to extremely sore and is caused by the top of your uterus pushing up and out against the area - not to mention your little one kicking you there! Rib pain is usually on the same side as where your baby’s back is and just below the breast. You may find that your ribs are more uncomfortable when you’re sitting down or leaning forward too.

There isn’t much you can do about baby’s position or the fact that your uterus is getting bigger, but there are a few things that you can do to ease the discomfort...

• Wear loose clothing and make yourself as comfortable as possible
• Pop cushions behind your back and in between your legs when lying down
• Try not to hunch over when sitting
• Avoid sitting down for long periods of time
• Use heat or cold packs
• Take a nice warm shower
• Stretch and exercise – it can help to loosen your muscles

If the discomfort is too much, always visit your doctor first - they might refer you to a physiotherapist at your local hospital to help ease the pain.

In the meantime, get in touch if you have any questions!
